It’s been a while since I wrote a product review, probably because I mostly try to keep it to products I feel might not be very talked about, yet does a great job. So let’s talk about Ryaal Activated Charcoal Black Mess, a natural face mask and scrub.
I bought this product 4-5 months ago and since then have used two jars already. Most of the skin care products I write about are things that I have used for a while now and have worked, or did not work for me, since having a combination skin it is extremely difficult to find the right products for your skin.
About the brand:
Ryaal is a beauty and skin care brand that introduced their products in the market in 2017. They have a wide range of natural and organic products that include skin and hair care, but what fascinates me the most is their wide range of essential oils.
About the product:
I have an extremely sensitive skin which is prone to acne and as per my dermatologist, I need to avoid scrubs completely. But the itch within led me on a hunt and might I just say that I have found exactly what I was looking for. The Black Mess is a 3 in 1 product that works as a mask, scrub and a cleanser. YES!
Packaging, Ingredients and texture:
Black Mess comes in a solid tub in matt black and is small enough to slide it in a bag if you are travelling.
The product has a great list of ingredients, the main highlight being activated charcoal (hence the name Black Mess), which is all the rage these days.
List: “Activated Charcoal, Kaolin Clay, Fullers Earth, Rhassoul Mud (Morocco’s Lava Clay), Organic Dead Sea Mud, Aloe Vera Extract, Peppermint Oil, Australian Tea Tree Oil, Sugar (Sucrose), Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Glycerine, Xanthum Gum.”
Texture wise, the mask is extremely thick and grainy for it can also be used as a scrub. It has a smokey, minty smell because of the charcoal and peppermint oil which I personally find very refreshing.
How I use Ryaal Black Mess Activated Charcoal mask and scrub and why I love it!
I have been using the mask for almost over 5 months now, which makes it pretty obvious as to how satisfied I am with it.
I mix the mask with Vedaearth rose water since the consistency is otherwise quite thick, leaving it on to dry for 15 minutes. I then dampen my face, or spray it with water and gently scrub, especially under my lips and nose areas before rinsing the mask off. Although, out of the two days, I exfoliate my face just once and otherwise use it as a mask only.
Apart from activated charcoal and aloe vera, what makes Black Mess a great face mask are it’s other unique ingredients like,
Moroccan Lava Clay , an extraordinary mineral-rich clay that helps dehydrated, sensitive skin and close enlarged pores and takes care of skin elasticity.
Dead Sead Mud is high in minerals. It helps exfoliate, removing stale sebums and toxins and naturally moisturizes the skin. The mud is ideal for acne prone skin.
The charcoal secretes excessive oil from all the unwanted areas and clears the face of dirt and anything that should not be on the face. The sugar and walnut granules aren’t harsh at all, which makes it an ideal scrub for my otherwise acne prone and sensitive skin making it easy for me to get rid of those unwanted whiteheads.
The product also claims to reduce pores which did take a while for me to notice (about 2 months) but it’s working, since I had visibly big pores on my nose and I can see they have faded a lot.
A big thumbs up to this product that does it’s job as a mask, scrub and a cleanser for a reasonable amount of INR 499/- only, plus it lasts for almost 2-3 months.
A lot of people said it is unwise to use the mask on dry skin, but even though I have a combination skin I was willing to give this a try, all I did was use it at night and apply a face oil after and it worked wonders and oh, it’s a must do for me once I get rid of make up off my face.
I love how soft and clean my skin feels after, especially in the morning the following day.
Tips on how to use face masks and scrubs:
- Clean your face before applying a face pack is a myth, if at all, it might end up making your skin even more dry.
- Do not scrub / exfoliate your face more than once a week.
- Do not keep face masks on for any more than 10-15 mins
- Make sure you wash the mask off before it becomes too dry and starts cracking.
- Using a mask 1-3 times a week is more than enough, doesn’t matter what time of the day it is, although I prefer using it at night.
- Prep your skin with a toner before using a face mask for better results, although using it after followed by a moisturizer, oil or, serum has its own benefits too. It all depends on your personal preferences.
Steps that I follow:
- Wash the face with normal running water
- Use Optimals Whitening Toner- Normal/Combination Skin
- Apply the mask
- Apply Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil – Face
